Opera Trip (4/20/18)
On Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st, the Herricks Tri-M Chapter was invited to attend the 49th annual Opera of GNS High School's Music Department. Members came to watch "The Tales of Hoffman", an Opera about a poet named Hoffman and the intricate story of his three contrasting loves. It was amazing for members to be able to watch a performance of an actual Opera, especially one with fellow high school students and performers. The show was absolutely outstanding, from performers singing beautifully in French, to the impeccable music played by the pit orchestra. It was definitely deemed to be an unforgettable performance. We hope to be invited back for their 50th show next year!

NYSSMA Festival (4/13-4/14)
On Friday, April 13th and Saturday, April 14th, Herricks Tri-M hosted another wonderful year of the New York State School Music Association Festival, where students from all across Nassau County attend to perform diligently prepared solos and receive adjudication from judges. Sophomores and Juniors additionally had the opportunity to prepare a Level 6 solo with an accompanist in order to audition for the NYSSMA All State Festival held in Rochester annually. Thanks to the hard work of Tri-M members who were in charge of running tables and rooms or delivering score sheets, things ran very smoothly and efficiently. Some judges even went above and beyond to express their gratitude for how nicely the members worked in organizing this event. Overall, it was a great success! We look forward to next year!

morton gould's daughter visit 3/20/18
On Friday, March 20, the Herricks Chamber Orchestra had the pleasure of getting to meet Abby Burton, or the reputable composer Morton Gould's, daughter. This was thanks to Mrs. Arnold, who personally knew and contacted Ms. Burton in the first place. The chamber orchestra actually performed some works written by Gould at the ASTA National Orchestra Festival the previous weekend, including "Gospel Train" and "Were you there? - Steal Away" from his collection of Spirituals for Strings. The orchestra performed these pieces for Ms. Burton, who expressed her gratitude and joy afterwards for getting to hear her father's music be played so well. The orchestra also had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Burton retell stories about her father, from how he became inspired to become a musician, to how he composed and performed complex arrangements at a young age, and how he gained success and wisdom throughout his career and life. It was an amazing opportunity to hear and learn such things about a composer from someone who personally knew him very well. The orchestra is thankful to have had such a great opportunity brought to them!

On March 2, 2018, Tri M hosted its annual Herricks Idol! This is arguable the biggest event of the school year! Because of snow on January 5, we we forced to reschedule to a new date. But at last, the show everyone had been waiting for finally arrived!
This night was jam-packed with crazy talent! All 10 contestants sounded amazing with songs that fit each one of them very well! It as a tough decision for the judges, but ultimately, they chose Lina Kim and Allison Yu as the female finalists, as well as Arjun Buslara and Abdelmossen Mossolem as the male finalists. These 4 finalists sang their full songs, and the amount of energy that the audience had for them was astounding. The whole auditorium was just filled with shouts of enjoyment.
All 4 finalists were great, but in the end, Allison Yu became the female winner and Arjun Bulsara was male winner for season 14!
This was the first time in as long as 10 seasons ago, that a freshman has won! Congrats to everyone to competed!
This night would not have been possible without the great leadership of the Tri M board and the tremendous help provided by the staff and custodians who were present!
We can't wait for season 15!

Faculty meeting (3/1/18)
On Thursday, March 1st, the Herricks Chamber Orchestra had the opportunity to perform some of their repertoire for teachers and staff at their faculty meeting, just a week before the ASTA National Orchestra Festival! This was a great chance for the faculty to actually see what the students had been preparing throughout the entire year, and to see what they will showcase at the festival in Atlanta. At the meeting, the orchestra played the first movement of Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite, titled "Prelude", completely from memory and while standing. After the performance, teachers were amazed by the professional level which the orchestra had achieved in their playing ability. It was great to provide the staff with a sneak peak of what the orchestra will be performing at nationals!

2nd Tri M Honors concert (2/14/18)
On February 14, 2018, Tri-M hosted its second Honors concert of the school year. All the Honor Ensembles—the Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, and Wind Ensemble—performed. Members who were not already participating in the concert were encouraged to usher audience members, hand out programs, and to stay and listen to the concert.
With the two major trips coming up for the the chamber orchestra and chamber choir, this concert was an especially great way for both ensembles to get good practice performing before a massive audience before they head off to represent our Tri M chapter and school in their respective conferences! This concert truly illustrated how well united all the honor groups within the Tri M community are, as well as with the other music department members. This concert was also a great way to show parents and the community why Herricks music is so great! As Mr Stickley said, "It's not like we just learned a couple of pieces." It was much more; the music had so much more meaning and it emanated throughout the hall through the entirety of the night!

On Saturday, February 20, the Herricks school district held its annual Lunar New Years Festival. This year, they have asked Tri-M to have an orchestra that will perform at the festival. Many of our members eagerly joined and worked very diligently through many rehearsals in order to give successful performance of a string quartet written for this particular holiday. It was nice to see the smiles spread throughout the audience as they heard out members performed. We hope this is something which will become a tradition, as our members enjoyed serving our community.

We attempted to achieve a "coffeehouse vibe"; creating a place where the student body could come and just enjoy the music and learn to appreciate it in a very fun way!

On Thursday, October 12, the John Lennon Bus arrived at our school! It was a prize that our music department had won thanks to one of our students, Jon Sanelli, who is now a Herricks graduate. Our music department was one of 3 to win this amazing accomplishment! Jon, along with 7 other lucky students (Aagarshan Gupta, Austin Kim, Cole Zimmerman, Julia Feldman, Ju Young Yi, Kyla Surajbali, and William Leung), were given the awesome opportunity to record and film a song which they were going to write in a day! These students had an amazing experience being able to work with the staff on-board and to utilize the equipment.
On Friday, October 13, our music department held an assembly along with the NAMM foundation, to talk about what exactly makes our school's music program so great! Many ensembles performed beautifully and many insightful discussions took place. The Lennon Bus visit sure is one that we'll never forget!

Ron Sutherland (10/6/17)
We held a workshop on October 6, in which we invited leadership speaker Ron Sutherland to come and teach a few Tri-M members about how music can help build on their leadership skills. In this leadership workshop, members participated in a few activities that helped strengthen our abilities to work together in order to understand each other. As a previous high school teacher and professional conductor, Mr. Sutherland really understood what us high school students were going through and was able to use his past experiences to teach us how music affects us daily. He is an expert motivational speaker whom we strive to be. This event brought members together and taught us a lot about being musical leaders.

Jazz night (6/9/17)
On June 9, Tri-M hosted Jazz Night, an annual event which marks the end of the school year. It was a beautiful Friday night filled with great music as our jazz ensembles took the stage outside in our courtyard to showcase the results of their hard work throughout the school year. This was a relaxed atmosphere as our guests enjoyed ice cream and snacks served by our new board members. A lot of Herricks staff and administrators were present showing their support for our music program. Ultimately it was a great success, and ended with a promposal from our very own President, Adam. But it is sad to see the farewells to our senior members. They will be missed, but we hope to see them visit at another music event!
