Children's hospital concert
In May, the Herricks Tri-M sent many of its members to the local children's hospital, the Cohen Children's Medical Center, to put on a performance for the hospital's patients. Members split up into small chamber groups and performed everything from pop to disney songs to jazz for a group of children and their parents. The performance was even broadcasted on the hospital's internal television system, and overall the event was a wonderful opportunity for our members to give back to the community, and to again bring smiles to many faces with music!

INCOMING FRESHMeN VIDEO 2016
This year, Tri-M put together a video introducing the Herricks High School music department for incoming freshmen! Nic, Paul, and Andrew toured around the music wing, and the freshmen band, orchestra, and choir were filmed. Ms. Fish, Mr. Stickley, Mr. Taylor, and Mrs. Haas also make guest appearances. The video is very casual, informative, encouraging, and relatable, and we hope that current 8th graders at Herricks Middle School will join the fabulous music groups next year!

School of rock
On Thursday, April 7, 2016, Herricks Tri-M broke a precedent and went on a second trip into Manhattan to watch School of Rock! After a delicious dinner and much on-foot navigating, members, along with Mrs. Haas, sat down in the Winter Garden Theatre and enjoyed the energetic Broadway show. Even with some on-stage changes, School of Rock was an exceptional spectacle, and the trip, the last for most who attended, was a wonderful and bittersweet bonding experience.
I wasn't sure what to expect from "The School of Rock", but it turned out to be one of my favorite musicals. I started tapping to all the musical numbers, it was relatable and it was the definition of fun. It was definitely the best last musical as a senior! bass day
Bass day was the gathering of all the bass players at Herricks, from all three elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. It was a great way to celebrate and appreciate the double bass and also a great way for all bass players to learn from one another. The elementary students were able to see what they should look forward to in their future Herricks music career, and the high school students were able to see how far we have come at musicians. Overall, it shows the true group effort and passion that Herricks is all about!

Herricks Tri-M was very proud to have member Mikayla Chan attend Music for All's Honor Orchestra of America and member Adam Cordero attend Music for All's Honor Band of America from March 9, 2016 to March 12, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana!
Music for All's Honor Orchestra of America was an inspiring and life changing experience. Every member was very talented and played with a great amount of passion, which brought us together like a professional orchestra. The conductors showed us what the true purpose of orchestra is, which is to come together and make beautiful music. Article by Natalie Tan and Mikayla Chan Photo by Mikayla Chan |
Tri-m honors concert
|
|
Herricks held its winter Tri-M Honors Concert on February 10, 2016. I thought that the performances from each music group (Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra) went very well. While I performed with the wind ensemble, I thought the ensemble itself was moderately prepared and did a decent performance with its solos (Illyrian Dances, Union March, and Gershwin). The chamber choir and the chamber orchestra I thought chose unique solos and did well performing those solos during the concert. Overall, I thought the Tri-M concert went very well.

conducting for a change
I thought that the Conducting for a Change was a seminar that taught musical conductors from other schools advice on how to become better at conducting. Although it was primarily for other conductors, I found it interesting because I gained a general understanding of my band from a conductor’s point of view, and what the conductor’s movements really meant every time the wind ensemble performed. Because of this, I became a stronger musician by learning more about how I can connect with the wind ensemble and the conductor while performing, making my performances richer.

Ms. Fish, Mr. Stickley, Ms. Haas, Mr. Hutchinson, Mr. Semerdjian, Mr. Stein, Mr. Frisone, and Mr. Hodge were among the music teachers, ordinary academic teachers with secret but superb music talent, and teachers who love to have fun and perform. The song choices were ranged from cute tunes to beautiful ballads, and many vocalists performed fantastic solos. Members participated in the performances and helped to facilitate the show behind the scenes and behind the counter. nyssma conference all-state
|
In Rochester, New York, from Thursday, December 3, 2015 to Sunday, December 6, 2015, Herricks took on NYSSMA Conference All-State! The students who attended, Nic Mrakovcic, Alan Chen, Adam Cordero, Jane Chen, Jasmine Benjamin, Lisa Soohyun Lim, Andrew Tsai, Kelly Yu, and Natalie Tan, were in a range of performing groups. Additionally, the Herricks Middle School Chamber Orchestra was chosen to play as a small chamber group. After an anxious and exhausting six-hour bus ride and intense seating auditions, students were able to meet and converse with people from all over New York over yummy food during dinner, lunch, and breakfast. We were also able to work with fantastic conductors and musicians during our nine hours of rehearsal per day, gaining knowledge not only about the technicalities and history but also the passion and brilliance of music. Spending hours with roommates, stand partners, and fellow choir members created foundations for relationships that will always be remembered. From midnight practices to jokingly dying during rehearsals to absolutely stunning run-throughs to hilarious room complications, there were many moments that we will never forget. At the end of the weekend, the concerts were very bittersweet, and all of us were reluctant to leave such an amazing place. Overall, everyone had a wonderful time at this once or twice-in-a-lifetime experience!

herricks idol auditions
We are so excited to present Herricks Idol 2016! To get things started, Herricks Tri-M held auditions on Thursday, November 5, 2016 and Friday, November 6, 2015. Many freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior boys and girls came out and sang two-minute excerpts of songs that best exhibited their voices. From pop hits currently on the charts to classic tunes to traditional pieces in foreign languages, everyone who auditioned had not only a particular style but also a unique tone. It was so enjoyable for Executive Board that we almost forgot we were still judging. Everyone was wonderful, and fortunately but unfortunately our job is now impossible. Stay tuned to see who will be performing in January!

Herricks High School put on a stellar show for its annual fall play: Grimm! The fantastic cast was able to pull off the singing, dancing, and acting skillfully and impressively. Off stage, members ran the concessions stands and ushered the play. We are so honored and proud to have our very own members represent our love of music and art through drama. It was a most appreciated and entertaining reminder that Tri-M stands for not only music on sheets and scores but also expression, action, and passion.

As a welcome to the new school year, Herricks Tri-M musicians played loud and proud on Thursday, October 24 at Back-to-School Night! Small groups, quartets, trios, duets, and soloists played and sang pieces of the students' choices, ranging from modern pop music to Mozart and Haydn. On top of that, a fun scavenger hunt led by our board members ended with a cool prize and laughs from everyone. Finally, our executive board gave a brief run-down of what Tri-M is all about for our initiates. Thank you for all who came out, and we're really looking forward to 2015-2016 Herricks Tri-M!

NYSSMA 2015
Herricks Shines at NYSSMA Herricks High School is home to an incredibly prestigious music program, one where students of all grades and instruments excel in their respective fields. Herricks students and the Herricks music department enjoy coming together and celebrating the fine accomplishments of musicians all over. This year Herricks hosted NYSSMA for musicians all over Nassau County; at our very own home, talented and bright individuals came and showcased their incredible hard work and dedication to the importance of music in students’ lives. Musicians were welcomed into the classrooms of Herricks, which served as performance rooms. Tri-m members themselves were stationed throughout the school, guiding guests and helping Herricks Tri-M Music Honor Society’s most important event function smoothly. The event was a praiseworthy success, showing just how committed Herricks Tri-M members are to supporting the music program throughout our community. The event’s extraordinary success was largely due to Tri-M President Dustin Liu for his remarkable leadership skills and continuous help. Herricks High School could not have been more proud to host such a significant event; the Herricks district cannot wait for NYSSMA 2016! Article by Sabreen Bhuiya |

Jazz Festival
On March 21, 2015, Herricks held its annual jazz festival with special clinician: Michael Philip Mossman. This event was a day long event with the participation of students in elementary to high school with features from schools such as Elmont, Jericho and our very own Herricks Jazz Band. The day was filled with the melodious content of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Stevie Wonder while audiences peered in and out of the auditorium to see the enormous amount of musician in their seats fully engaged in the music as well as in the instruction following the pieces. The day ended with awards and a tribute to Michael Philip Mossman himself. Awards such as “Best Saxophone Section” was awarded to Jericho High School while “Best Trombone Section” was awarded to our very own Herricks High School. the ring and the rose
The Herricks High School rendition of The Ring and the Rose made its premiere on March 12 and 13, 2015. Herricks High School always puts on a stellar show for its annual Spring Drama and this production was no exception. Although The Ring and the Rose demanded the acting competence of performers who could do everything from sword duels to giving birth on stage, the cast pulled it off skillfully and impressively. Off stage, we were fortunate to have other Tri-M members run the concessions stands and facilitate the play. This performance was particularly meaningful because it was the last time many esteemed actors and actresses would grace our stage. We are so proud and so fortunate to have our very own Tri-M members represent our love of music and art through drama. It was a most appreciated and entertaining reminder that Tri-M does not only stand for music in the form of staffs and notes but also expression, action, and passion.
Music in our schools month
Although the Herricks Tri-M celebrates music everyday, March was the official Music in our Schools month and our chapter decided to commemorate it by asking our members what music makes them feel! Here are some of the answers...
Valentine's day coffeehouse
On February 12, 2015, Herricks High School's own Men and Women's Choirs collaborated to put on a memorable and heartfelt performance. The Valentine's Day Coffeehouse was a casual performance held in the lunchroom where all students could listen to their peers and get in the V-Day spirit. Just days away from Valentine's Day, the Choirs appropriately centered their repertoire around pop songs that centered around the theme of love. Groups large and small performed songs from John Legend's "All of Me" to Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Many choral Tri-M members were simultaneously able to showcase their talents in front of an audience and provide selfless community service. Perhaps most endearing of aspect of this concert was that all proceeds were donated to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In loving memory of Ashley Kong, a Herricks student who was lost to cancer, the Men and Women's Choirs decided give back in her name. All in all, it was a very intimate and warm occasion that captured the way music has the ability to console in times of sadness.
The scott lang leadership seminar
On February 7th, 10 members of the Herricks Tri-M chapter were lucky enough to be invited to the Scott Lang Leadership Seminar at Adelphi University. For almost a decade, Scott Lang has been educating and entertaining student and adult audiences of all ages through his workshops and keynote presentations. As a nationally known leadership trainer for the past seven years, Scott works with some of America’s top ensembles and conducts over 100 workshops annually. lisfa chamber festival
Bright and early on the morning of January 10th, 2015, 18 members of the Herricks orchestras traveled to Rosyln Middle School to participate in the Nassau County LISFA Chamber Festival. Separated into quartets and even a sextet, these musicians worked tirelessly to put their pieces together. At the festival, the groups were split up into separate rooms and given the opportunity to work with the talented members of the Bryant Park Quartet. These seasoned musicians taught the high schoolers everything from how to pass on melodies to using music to express certain emotions and in the end, each group was given the chance to perform their piece on stage. All the groups' hard work paid off in the end as they each performed seamlessly for an appreciative audience!
2015 Herricks idol
The time has finally come! Every year, our Tri-M board and members spend months preparing for Idol, one of Herricks' biggest and most anticipated events. In the end, all our hard work paid off and accumulated into one absolutely amazing show.

Winter choir concert
December 18th, 2014 Photo credits: Veronica Mak
The rich and beautifully sounding “Herricks 16” opened up the evening with the patriotic “Star Spangled Banner”. The Herricks 16 opened the night and set the audience in the right direction for an amazing night of the Choir Concert here at Herricks.
Winter Concert III, the “Choir Concert”, is where all of Ms. Louise O’Hanlon’s singing groups at Herricks High School come together to fill the auditorium with amazing sounds and songs.
First, the Herricks 16 filled the air with John Lennon’s and Paul McCartney’s “If I Fell”. Next, the Mixed Chorus, who sang a Scottish folk song and a very energetic Xhoshan folk song, was conducted by Stephanie Haas and Jennifer Giustino, two choir professionals who didn’t hesitate to help out Ms. O’Hanlon and be involved in the amazing Music Program here at Herricks.
Next, the Men of the mixed chorus sang “The Highlands” by Lon Beery. The Treble Makers, an all-girls choir, then proceeded to play the heart-warming “Chapel of Love” and the “Best Day of my Life”.
Winter coffeehouse |
|
On December 12th, 2014, Tri-M and the Jazz band held its very first winter coffee house! The event was created to not only support the Jazz band, but also to give students a space to perform and just have fun with music. Many different groups performed, from a brass quintet and an orchestra group to talented signers accompanied by guitars and pianos. As they filled the cozy winter night with their music, Tri-m volunteers sold yummy baked goods, hot chocolate, and coffee in the back. In the end, our very own band director, Mr. Stickley, and orchestra conductor, Ms. Fish, sang holiday carols accompanied by various band students! This coffeehouse was truly a heart-warming and fun event, perfect for the holiday season.

2014 All-State
The NYSSMA All-State music conference is always a much anticipated and exciting event for all whom are chosen to participate, and this year was certainly no exception! 9 Herricks Tri-m members traveled for 7 hours on December 4th to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime, 4-day musical experience in Rochester, NY. The students stayed in the Rochester Radisson hotel, spending their days meeting and befriending talented musicians from all over the state of NY and working in amazing orchestras, bands, and choir groups led by well-known conductors and mentors. Many students earned great positions at the festival, and our very own Tri-m president, Dustin Liu, performed a solo as principle chair in the String Orchestra! After days of hard work, these groups got the chance to perform at the beautiful Eastman Theater in front of their family and friends. We're so proud of all the students who were chosen for this event!
The Music man musical
This year's musical, The Music Man, premiered on Friday, November 14th and ran for two more showings on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Tri-M volunteers were present at all three showings, ushering for the packed event as well as selling refreshments to the many family and friends who came to support the talented cast. In addition to our wonderful volunteers, many members of Tri-M also played in the pit orchestra as well as performed in the play itself.
With the help of our ushers and volunteers, the nights all went smoothly and everyone had a great time seeing the show afterwards. Congratulations to all the gifted musicians and cast members for a fantastic performance!

Herricks idol auditions
The time has come for the preparation of Herricks Idol to begin! Perhaps the most exciting part of the process is the audition and selection of the contestants. On November 6th, 7th, and 10th, all members of Herricks High School were able to showcase their singing abilities and vie for a spot on Herricks Idol 2015! All judging and administration was carried out by the Herricks Tri-M Executive Board.
There are always an abundance of auditioners each year and, this year was no exception. The turnout included students from all grades. The immense talent shown made narrowing down to 10 finalists very difficult.
After careful consideration it was decided that Jasmine Benjamin, Anika Boduch, Amanda Breit, Jzabelle Coronado, Caity DiBattista, Arjun Bulsara, Eduardo Kim, Daniel Magaldi, Joe Om, and Kyle Schultz were to be our contestants on this year's Herricks Idol! Congratulations to the finalists as well as everyone who auditioned.

Tri-M Honors concert
The Tri-M Honors Concert in October always seems to sneak up upon all the Chamber groups every year. However, all groups definitely did not disappoint in the selections and executions of their repertoires this year on October 22nd. The Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Chamber Choir all delivered performances of the top caliber. This shows true dedication on the parts of the musicians and teachers to have prepared such high-level material so quickly. All the groups worked cohesively and cooperatively to make a truly beautiful concert night.
The night could not have been run so smoothly without help from our Tri-M ushers. With two more Tri-M Honors Concerts underway, there is high hope for the coming concerts to be even more fantastic.

Viola day
On the morning of October 18th, the very first annual Viola Day was hosted at none other than Herricks High School. Talented viola students from schools across the county, elementary through high school, came in attendance. Held in the Music Department in the school, students participated in workshops to finesse their skills. Some of our own Tri-M students participated as well. Divided by age, the workshops were taught by some of the most ingenuous and accomplished orchestra teachers on the Island. The day ended with a performance by each workshop group as well as some lunch enjoyed in the cafeteria.
It was such an honor to have held the first Viola Day at our own high school. We hope that students, teachers, and parents alike enjoyed the experience.

Back to school night 2014
Music once again filled the hallways of our school this year during Back to School Night on September 23rd. Tri-M members took turns filling one hour shifts where they used their talents to serenade parents as they traveled from one class to another.
Members were stationed either in groups or individually all over the school. During the moments between periods, everything from Disney songs to classical concertos could be heard down the hallways as members played together on instruments as varied as a guitar and a flute.
The night ended beautifully as parents trickled out of the school, remarking on the music they enjoyed throughout the evening. Thanks for another successful Back to School Night!

initiate picnic
Herricks Tri-M's annual initiate picnic took place August 22nd at Christopher Morley Park. Tri-M members old and new came to together to celebrate the beginning of yet another year.
To usher in the newly initiated members and break the ice, the group started with Human Bingo. After getting to know each other better, we all went straight toward the FOOD! Courtesy of our very own board, all were able to enjoy barbecued burgers and hotdogs - and luckily without a fire.
Later, initiates and veteran members were given the chance to introduce themselves. The board also laid down what was to come for the year, giving the new members a gist of what Tri-M would be.
The rest of the picnic continued leisurely. Members ate, played disk, and most importantly enjoyed good music.
Here's to Tri-M 2014-15!
2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Herricks Jazz Night
Held in the gym of Herricks High School was the district's annual Jazz Night. The gym was transformed into a jazz club-esque atmosphere fit for the talent soon to be heard. It was an evening filled with good music, food, and company - the perfect way to start off the upcoming summer. Spectators of all ages alike were able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the smooth jazz of the evening.
The groups that participated included the Middle School Jazz Band, Herricks Silver Band, and Herricks Blue Band all headed by Mr. Taylor as well as Herricks Sixteen Jazz Choir headed by Ms. O'Hanlon. The blend of brass, string, and voice made for an enjoyable musical performance on part of all the groups that played. What else was apparent was the harmony of all the individuals that attended. Whether it was a father buying ice cream for his child to help fundraise or a star saxophone player sax-ing his heart out, the district definitely came together to bring about night to benefit the whole.

Jamnesty
June 6, 2014 marked Herricks High School's first annual Jamnesty festival. In an effort to fund raise and raise awareness to abuse toward women and children internationally, Herricks' own Amnesty Club sponsored the event.
The night was filled with a medley of different music performances with both members and non-members of Tri-M. Ranging from smooth jazz to mainstream rap, the performances made for a memorable experience. Perhaps most memorable of the night was Max Pau's rendition of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" complete with background dancers and wig. The night was also sentimental in the fact that it was the final chance for many seniors of the music department to grace the stage. All in all, Jamnesty was a night to remember and one that definitely hit the high note!

tri-m honors concert
Our last Tri-M honors concert took place on May 28, 2014 at Adelphi University featuring Herricks High School's Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra in a whirlwind of amazing performances. In addition to being the last concert of the year, this performance was also the final concert for our Chamber Orchestra's beloved conductor, Ms. Maddox, before she retires from her 30 plus years of teaching at Herricks.
All of the performers played and sang magnificently with several students even performing as soloists in various pieces. At the end of the concert, Ms. Maddox was recognized for her years of dedication at Herricks and several alumni as well as seniors from the Chamber Orchestra presented her with bouquets of flowers and words of appreciation. Thank you Ms. Maddox for everything you've done for us; we'll miss you so much! |
