Tri-M Honors Concert
On Wednesday, May 29, the chamber choir, chamber orchestra, and wind ensemble held their last concert for the year at the beautiful Madison Theater at Molloy College. In order to be admitted to these three ensembles, students must undergo an audition, ensuring they will be able to keep up with the demanding repertoire throughout the year. The concert started with senior Justin Cheung from the chamber choir as he sang the Star Spangled Banner. Directed by Ms. Louise O’Hanlon and accompanied by Ms. Naomi Aomori, the chamber choir then continued the concert. They sang Ave Maria by Giuseppe Verdi, Duerme Negrito by Atahualpa Yupanqui (arranged by Emile Sole). During this song, Marika Reynolds, Aakriti Sharma, and Sarah Winkler were featured as soloists. Then, the program continued with Feller from Fortune by Canadian Folk (arranged by Harry Somers), Please Stay by Jake Runestad and featured senior Shazmin Lakhani. This song is a hymn for hope for those who are fighting against mental illness or know someone battling it. During this piece, many of the choir members stated quotes from those who were struggling with mental illness in hopes of touching the hearts of the audience and raising awareness. Afterwards, they sang the upbeat Elijah Rock by Spiritual (arranged by Moses Hogan) and I Sing Because I’m Happy by Rollo Dilworth, featuring senior Kyla Surajbali. The choir finished with the Irish blessing song they always leave their audience with, May the Road Rise Up To Meet You. Following the chamber choir was the chamber orchestra. Conducted by Ms. Catherine Fish, they played Sinfonia IX Grave-Allegro by Mendelssohn, Aria by Bach (transcribed by Leopold Stokowski), featuring the cello section, and Danza Latina by Brian Balmages. This piece featured the viola section, but most distinctly, violist Hanna Yen, bassist Darren Yang, pianist Julia Feldman, and percussionists Dara Bao and Austin Kim. Their program then ended with Zaghlala by Islam Chipsy (arranged by Jacob Garchik). This contemporary song means “blurred vision caused by strong light hitting the eyes,” and featured Dara Bao and Julia Feldman on the darbukas. The concert ended with the wind ensemble. Led by Mr. Scott Stickley, their program started with Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise by Albert Franz Doppler (arranged by John R. Bourgeois). This piece featured senior Joanna Lau on the flute. Then, they played Holst Second Suite In F Movement Movement III Song of the Black Sheep and Movement IV Fantasia from the Dargason by Gustav Holst. Their penultimate piece was Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli, featuring senior clarinetist Ju Young Yi. Lastly, the wind ensemble performed the Herricks March which was composed by Michael Paciullo, a junior member of the wind ensemble. It was a sad yet festive night because it was the last concert for the seniors, but a fantastic concert showcasing nearly a year’s worth of hard work. We thank all those who attended and made this concert possible. We’ll miss the seniors!

Last but not least was the Symphony Band, directed by Mr. Scott Stickley. Ju-Young Yi's Senior Recital (5/11/19)
On May 11th, Herricks Tri-M’s co-president Ju-Young Yi held her senior recital at Pforzheimer Hall in the Manhattan School of Music. Ju-Young plays the clarinet and got accepted into MSM as a sophomore. Now, as a senior, she will be leaving MSM. The recital took place to tie up her final year at the music school and to show off her musical capabilities. She performed pieces by André Massager, Gerald Finzi and Francis Poulenc. Many peers who attended her recital attested to her beautiful playing, and many noted her recital was worth losing time to study for their upcoming exams! We sincerely congratulate Ju-Young on all her musical achievements in school and outside of school. We know she will continue to thrive as she leaves high school and steps foot into the prestigious Eastman School of Music this fall. We’ll miss you!

Julia Feldman's Senior Recital (5/11/19)
On May 11th, pianist Julia Feldman held her senior recital at Greenfield Hall in the Manhattan School of Music. Julia is the Public Relations Officer for Tri-M, and has attended MSM since the age of 7. The recital was held to commemorate her hard work and graduation out of the music school. During the recital, she was accompanied by clarinetist Ju-Young Yi, and violinist Grace Kang. Julia performed pieces by Bach and Tchaikovsky solo and the Khachaturian trio piece with Ju-Young and Grace. As usual, their performance was flawless. Family, friends, and teachers packed the hall to listen to music that was practiced for countless months. We celebrate a successful recital and the beginning of Julia’s next chapter in life out of high school and into college, where she will be studying at Duke University. You will be missed!

Freshman Spring Concert (5/8/19)
On May 8, 2019, the freshman music ensembles along with the silver jazz band held their last concert of the year. The audience saw performances from the concert band, silver jazz band, ninth grade orchestra, and treble choir. Each group demonstrated their musical aptitude during the performance. The night first began with the lively concert band directed by Mr. Scott Stickley, performing: I’m Seventeen Come Sunday, At Twilight, Dancing at Stonehenge, and Exuberance. This was followed by uniquely musical interpretations of the songs: Who Me?, Nice N’ Easy, and Back Bone by the silver jazz band led by Dr. Geoffrey Taylor. Next, for a change in music style, the ninth grade orchestra, directed by Ms. Catherine Fish, graciously started their portion of the concert with Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 8 and the infamous emotional Hungarian Dance No. 5. They then demonstrated their musical flexibility by playing Rondo in Blue and Blue Fire Fiddler. The concert finally ended with the performance from the treble choir, led by Ms. Louise O’ Hanlon. They demonstrated the capabilities and variability of their angelic voices in the pieces: Child With a Starry Crayon, Shule Aroon, See the Gypsies, and ending with Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree. The freshman musicians successfully showed their large musical capacity during this last concert. It’s no doubt that Herricks’ musical reputation will be maintained by these astounding young musicians! Congratulations to them on their final concert of the year!

36th Annual Young Musicians Concert (5/2/19)
On May 2, Herricks’ infamous cello quartet performed at the 36th Annual Young Musicians Concert, held at Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The quartet consists of Dara Bao, a former student at the Manhattan School of Music and now a student at the Juilliard Pre College, Kyle Pinzon, a student attending the Manhattan School of Music, Justin Yang, and Justin Koe, all of whom are sophomores. All four of these cellists are highly regarded not only in our chamber orchestra, but in the music department as well. The ensemble advanced to the finalist round after sending in a recording this past fall and then making it to the semifinal round, where they received coaching from professional musicians and gave an excellent performance at the concert that followed it. The quartet performed the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 Movement III Fugue. The Herricks chamber orchestra was able to attend this performance, and they attest to the high level of musicianship these four cellists bring to the stage. It's also due to Ms. Fish's constant mentorship and dedication in maturing these four cellists that they've come this far. Congratulations to the cello quartet on their hard work and another fabulous concert!

NYSSMA Solo Music Festival (4/12/19-4/13/19)
On April 12 and 13, the Herricks High School once again hosted the annual NYSSMA Music Festival for strings, band, and vocal instruments, where students perform auditions for levels ranging from 1 up to All-State. Herricks High School is one of two schools on Long Island that annually hosts a section of the NYSSMA Music Festival. Student musicians dedicated an imaginable amount of time and practice for these auditions, as these are the scores that will be used to choose participants for music festivals such as All-County, LISFA, and All-State. Per usual, Herricks Tri-M members all volunteered for this festival by monitoring the audition rooms, guiding students and parents, and seamlessly dealing with any other issues that arose along the way. Though the performers were nervous, Tri-M members did their best to assure them that there was nothing to be worried about. Congratulations to all of those who auditioned and thank you to all the Tri-M members! We couldn’t have done this without you!

The Addams Family
On April 5-6, the Herricks High School Music Department showcased The Addams Family. This musical is about a man who claims to be Fester, the lost brother of Gomez Addams. He shows up to the Addams’ house one day, leaving the the family surprised, but elated. However, as time passes, Morticia accumulates evidence that the man who claimed to be Fester may actually be an impostor. When questioned about his past life, he can’t seem to remember minute, but important details. Through his lawyer, Tully Alford, self-claimed Fester successfully kicks out the Addams family from their own home. But luckily, Gomez finds out the two are plotting to steal the Addams opulence and therefore sets on to stop Fester. This play kept the audience on their toes with each passing moment, and the performers were simply amazing. They spent an innumerable amount of time perfecting each scene, whether it was acting, dancing, or singing. Furthermore, the pit orchestra was an essential factor to the show’s success as they provided the much needed music to make the performance just a bit more enjoyable. Shows like these are proof that our music department excels not just in orchestra, band, or choir, but in musicals like these as well. We’re so proud to say we’re well rounded. The show couldn’t have been accomplished without the performers and directors dedication. We congratulate all those who performed and can’t wait for the next play!

And we are so proud to say that we have both of our Tri-M presidents, Ju-Young Yi and Joanna Lau, both of whom won first chair after sending in video recordings, in this highly regarded festival. We also have our former nationalist, Grace Kang, as our representative in the orchestra, as well as Shazmin Lakhani, winner of Herricks Idol Season 15, as our representative in the mixed choir ensemble. These seniors stayed at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania from April 4-7. The orchestra was conducted by Jung Ho Pak, who also conducts the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra played Shostakovich 7th Symphony Movement IV and Divertimento by Leonard Bernstein. The band was led by Brad Genevro, from the University of Texas at El Paso. They played Profanation from Symphony No. 1: Jeremiah by Leonard Bernstein, October by Eric Whitacre, Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Aldridge Grainger, and Circus Bee by Henry Fillmore. The mixed choir was directed by Rollo Dilworth from Temple University. They sang “Sing Unto God” from Judas Maccabaeus, written by Handel, “Zum Gali,” arranged by Goldman, “Lullaby” from Three Nocturnes by Daniel Elder, “Shine the Heavenly Light” adopted and arranged by Dilworth himself, “Celebrai!” by Will Lopes, and “Cum Sancto Spiritu” by Hyo-Won Woo. Kyle Pinzon's Solo Recital (3/30/19)
On March 30, sophomore cellist Kyle Pinzon held a solo recital at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. He attended the Precollege Division of the Manhattan School of Music since eighth grade, and continues to do so. During the recital, Kyle performed Bach Suite III Prelude, Saint-Saens A Minor Concerto, and Brahms E Minor Sonata I Movement. His program alone is a testament to how much time Kyle has invested in playing his cello, as all his pieces are extremely difficult and require a level of mastery that can only be achieved through intense practice and impeccable skill. It is also due to his teachers and mentors at the precollege that Kyle has continued his cello career successfully. We truly admire the zeal Kyle possesses in regards to playing the cello, and we are so thankful Kyle extends his passion for music outside of school. Kyle is a valued member of our school’s chamber orchestra while also being a part of our school’s most renowned cello quartet, which has been accepted countless times, including this year, by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to perform at Alice Tully Hall. Kyle also created a separate social media account dedicated solely to his cello, where he regularly uploads videos of himself having fun with the cello, inspiring others to pursue their musical aspirations. We have no doubt Kyle will continue to make such a great impact on his community by playing the cello. Congratulations on a great recital!

NYSSMA Recital (3/28/19)
On March 28, Herricks Tri-M members gathered together to hold a recital, playing their NYSSMA pieces in front of each other in preparation for the upcoming NYSSMA Solo Music Festival on April 12th and 13th held here, at Herricks. Each member courageously faced the audience of musicians, performing pieces they’ve been preparing for months on instruments ranging from the violin to the trombone. Everyone showcased outstanding musicality and individuality within their playing, which is proof of their hard work. Students were separated into different rooms based on their instrument category. This recital is important in helping students shake off their nerves so they can perform at their most optimal level during their actual auditions in two weeks. It’s no wonder musicians at Herricks always receive top ranking scores and have a high prevalence of All-State acceptances! Nothing beats hard work and practice. We wish them all the best in their audition!

Best Community for Music Education Award
On March 27, it was announced that the Herricks Public Schools received the title of being Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. This award has been given out for the past 20 years and is only given to districts that regard music as a core facet of students’ education. Furthermore, only districts with exceptional accolades are considered for this honor. Our school district has a total of nine bands, nine orchestras and twelve choirs, and offers theory, composition, music history, and theatre classes. In addition, an astounding 80% percent of the students at our district are invested in musical performance. To name just a few of our accomplishments, the Music and Performing Arts Department has received several GRAMMY Foundation school awards, New York State School Music Association distinctions, and an acceptance to national level competitions such as the National Orchestra Festival under American String Teachers Association in March of 2017. Additionally, Herricks students are admitted to distinguished music schools such as the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. And it’s no surprise when musicians make it to All-State, All-Eastern, and All-Nationals. This is all due to the musicians, music teachers, and staff, who pour in countless hours to share their joy of making music, and taking pride in it. It is no wonder Herricks is known heavily for its musical aspirations and success. We hope to earn this reputable title next year, and sincerely thank those who have supported our musical endeavors thus far. Let’s go Herricks!

Honor Orchestra of America (3/13/19-3/16/19)
It’s incredible how many musicians at Herricks aspire for musical opportunities outside of school. From March 13-16, senior violinist Christina Kim and junior bassist Ethan Feng (also the Tri-M secretary/treasurer) were accepted to be a part of the national Honor Orchestra of America. Exceptional high school orchestra musicians from all over the nation are brought together here to share their passion for music. Christina and Ethan had to submit an audition tape of two contrasting excerpts of their choice in order to be considered to be a part of this orchestra. Musicians practice and show off all their hard work with esteemed conductors while building lifelong relationships with many diverse people with a common goal: a love for music. The orchestra was conducted by Sey Ahn, who is a renowned pianist, and directed by Larry Livingston from the Thornton School of Music, the oldest regularly running arts institution in Southern California. They performed Scheherazade Op. 35 by Rimsky-Korsakov which is a piece inspired by the story of One Thousand and One Nights, or Arabian Nights. It is important to note that during the time this piece was composed (late 1880s), there were immense changes to the nature of music. People were going for program music, which means music with a story to tell. This piece captured a picture of Scheherazade (Shahrazad), the young wife of the sultan Schahriar (Shahryar), explaining stories to her husband to prevent his plan to kill her. Ethan described his experience as “really engaging and mind opening” because he met “people from all over the country”. He also couldn’t help but mention how his favorite part of the trip was “definitely the performance at Butler University, Clowes Memorial Hall on Friday night because the feeling of performing is something intangible. Sure it’s fun, but there is something fulfilling about it that [I] can’t put into words”. These events show how powerful music is even in society today, because it brings many together and serves as a language that is universal. We hope fellow musicians at Herricks will follow in the footsteps of these two!

National Chamber Music Festival (3/14/19-3/16/19)
From March 14-16, the clarinet-violin-piano trio and the cello quartet flew to Indianapolis to participate in the National Chamber Music Festival which is a part of the Music for All National Festival, or better known as MFA. The trio consisted of clarinetist Ju-Young Yi (our Tri-M co-President), violinist Grace Kang (our school’s previous nationalist), and pianist Julia Feldman (our Tri-M Public Relations Officer), who are all seniors. The cello quartet consisted of Dara Bao, Kyle Pinzon, Justin Koe, and Justin Yang, who are all sophomores. Directed by Ms. Catherine Fish, these two groups were required to send in recordings as their auditions and were accepted back in September— 2 of only 15 ensembles accepted! This festival was created to provide wind and string musicians the chance to make music on a national stage, receive professional ensemble and individual instrument master classes and coaching, student leadership workshops, and communal gatherings for students and teachers. There was also a Gala Awards Banquet observing all accepted ensembles. Furthermore, while the ensembles performed, they were recorded and given written detailed reviews of their performances from a committee of professionals. The trio played Movements I-IV of the Milhaud Trio, which contained every possible fusion of Western instruments and a defying orientation towards the conventional music standards, evident through the simulated Baroque elegance against the downright jazz impressions. They also performed Movement III of the Khachaturian Trio, which showcased Khachaturian's hallmark manipulation of cross rhythms, folk songs, and harmonies. More specifically, Movement III was a set of variations on an Uzbekistan folk song, which differentiated the timbres of the instruments while highlighting the clarinet as a folk instrument. The cello quartet performed Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1, III. Fugue, which combined Brazilian folk and popular music with music inspired by Bach to integrate Baroque harmonic and polyphonic techniques to Brazilian music. They also played the Popper Cello Quartet. With all the wonderful skills and environment the musicians were provided for during this event, it is safe to say that this festival is truly distinguishable, and we as a district are so honored to have had not just one, but two groups be a part of this amazing experience among other ensembles across the nation. Congratulations, and thank you to Ms. Fish for pushing these two groups to work their hardest and accompanying these two groups despite her injury! It was all worth it!

Herricks Idol (3/15/19)
On March 15, it seemed as if the lights shone brighter on the Herricks High School stage on this Friday night for Herricks’ own take on the popular singing show, American Idol. The auditorium was intricately decorated with fairy lights, balloons, and streamers by the Herricks Tri-M members, setting the mood for the evening. This year, the Tri-M Board came up with the fun idea to do The Greatest Showman as the theme. Many new things were implemented this year, including: a theme, photo booth, a vinyl banner, and even a house band! Keeping up with the millennials, Tri-M board also included two snapchat filters designed by me (Karina Ng)! The night started off with the Tri-M executive board welcoming everyone, explaining how the funds would go to charities (Give a Note and Midori and Friends), and introductions of the MC’s: the school’s senior president Kaitlyn Louie, and the hilarious Aaron Kalani. The 10 daring contestants then stood on stage. Herricks Idol is regarded as one of the biggest events of the year! All the participants had spent weeks rehearsing, with and without the help of the Tri-M Executive Board, for this event. The crazy talented contestants--Justin Cheung (12), Lawson Everitt (11), Mehakpreet Kaur (10), Andrew Kim (10), Talia Kohan (9), Shazmin Lakhani (12), Angie Lee (12), Duhan Lee (9), Savannah Mehran (12), and Christopher Soo (12)— each braved the stage and audience. First, a humorous introduction by the MCs and a light-hearted introduction video was played for each contestant for the audience to get to know them better. Then they performed a short version of their chosen song (Justin Cheung-Japanese Denim, Lawson Everitt-Say You Won’t Let Go, Mehak Kaur-Girl on Fire, Andrew Kim-She Was Mine, Talia Kohan-Remedy, Shazmin Lakhani-Love on the Brain, Angie Lee-Easy, Duhan Lee-Million Dreams, Savannah Mehran-Hello Love, and Chris Soo-Already Home) and received comments from the panel of judges consisting of : musician and Herricks alumni Natalie Fabian, former Herricks Tri-M President who founded Herricks Idol Susan Askinazy, and our very own principal Mrs. Joan Keegan. After the semi-finalist round, there was a 15-minute intermission in which Tri-M members sold a wide variety of snacks and refreshments. The show continued with the announcement of the 4 finalists: Shazmin Lakani, Savannah Mehran, Lawson Everitt, and Andrew Kim. They each sang a long version of their song followed by loud cheers from the audience. While ballots were counted for the winners, the audience enjoyed four guest performances from: Allison Yu (Season 14 Herricks Idol winner), William Leung (Season 13 Herricks Idol runner-up), Lina Kim (Season 14 Herricks Idol contestant), and Natalie Fabian. All the contestants and executive board members stood on stage for the suspenseful announcement of the finalists. The MCs finally announced Season 15’s winners: Shazmin Lakani and Lawson Everitt. Flowers and chocolates were handed out to the winners, judges, music department secretary Mrs. Hill, and the Herricks Tri-M advisor Mrs. Arnold. The night finally ended with an amazing group performance of “This is Me” to match with the theme, The Greatest Showman. This was an unimaginable night and couldn’t have been accomplished without the executive board and Tri-M members. Another unforgettable season Herricks Idol is finished!

Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Scholarship Recital (3/9/19)
On March 9, one of our very own Tri-M Presidents, Ju Young Yi, held a scholarship recital at the Miller Recital Hall in Manhattan School of Music. She was recently awarded a full scholarship, one of only a few, to the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and generously played this recital as a thank you to her benefactors and all her supporters. Though the program was only 20 minutes, Ju Young’s talented clarinet playing skills made every single second indescribably satisfying. She played the first three movements of Finzi’s Five Bagatelles and Solo de Concours by Messager, displaying incredible musicality and dedication to her passion. It’s no question that her hard work and commitment is reflected in her performance. Friends and family came to support her endeavor and show their love. We all know that Ju Young was very deserving of this generous scholarship, having also won the competitive MYO Concerto Competition early February and the honor to perform at the Music for All Chamber Festival in Indianapolis from March 12-14. We are so proud to have such an accomplished and hard working friend and president! Without a doubt, we will always cheer her on wherever she goes!

New York Aspiring Artists Competition (2/22/19)
It’s truly a blessing to have so many musicians who strive to challenge themselves and delve into competitions. On February 15, junior Ethan Feng found out that he made it to the winner’s concert in the New York International Competition for Young Artists. Ethan plays the bass and is also our Tri-M secretary/treasurer. After sending in a recording of himself performing Sonata in G minor Movement I and II by Henry Eccles from memory, Ethan, despite being among many other contestants, was able to earn a spot as a winner in this distinguished competition. He applied to this competition under the Young Professional Division which ranges from ages 13-18. The requirements for this competition are to choose repertoire from the style of Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary, and play it from memory for no longer than six minutes. On February 22, Ethan performed at the winner’s concert located in Weill Hall at the renowned Carnegie Hall as the second prize winner of his division. He played the same piece from his audition. This is a testament to how valuable music is to Herricks musicians, and their ambitions to extend their talents beyond their music classes. We are so happy for Ethan!

Executive Board Dinner (2/21/19)
On February 21, after countless times of rescheduling, nearly all of the Herricks Tri-M Executive Board members were able to meet in one place to enjoy a meal together and discuss ways to improve Tri-M. They met at Sri Pa Pai where they ordered appetizers such as fried calamari, fried spring rolls, and chicken satay. They then proceeded to ordering dishes such as the signature pad thai, pad see-ew, drunken noodles, fried soft crabs, and fried rice. They also couldn’t help but order thai iced tea with milk and tapioca pearls. After filling their stomachs with good hot food, they then proceeded to eat gelato at Gelateria Dei Coltelli. It was a great time of getting to know each other better while eating delicious food and talking about upcoming Tri-M events such as Idol. Speaking of Idol, it’s only two weeks away! We hope to see you all there!

On February 19, several Herricks Tri-M members dedicated their time during their February break and returned to LIJ Hospital for another visit of volunteer performances. These performances are always so rewarding because the patients and staff never fail to appreciate the music! In the lobby of the Center for Advanced Medicine, the groups returned the element of color, playing various pieces such as: Jupiter, Air on G String, March in D Major, Silent Night, Minuet from Sonata No. 6, Jesu, and Joy of Man's Desiring. The musicians created a unique ensemble of the cello, viola, bass, and clarinet. The students will return again in the spring for another session of amazing music along with more Tri-M members!

2nd Tri-M Honors Concert (2/13/19)
It’s time for another concert! On February 13, the chamber orchestra, wind ensemble, and chamber choir gathered together once again to share their love of music with everyone after a day of being snowed in. Despite the very short time to practice and master the songs, the three ensembles were truly amazing, which goes to show the unbelievable talent, dedication, and appreciation for music all Herricks musicians and teachers possess. The wind ensemble, directed by Mr. Scott Stickley, started the night off with I’m Seventeen Come Sunday by Percy Aldridge Grainger and arranged by Larry D. Daehn. They then played Letter from Home by Aaron Copland and arranged by Brian Belski. Their last piece was Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli. This piece blends jazz and the blues with hints of contemporary approaches. The wind ensemble executed all their works incredibly. Following the wind ensemble was the chamber choir, directed by Ms. Louise O’Hanlon and accompanied by Naomi Aomori on the piano and drum. They sang When Memory Fades by Eric Nelson in honor of the passing of Ms. Catherine Fish’s father and for those with loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia. They then changed the mood completely by singing Peze Kafe by Sten Kallman, which is about a Haitian boy and the consequences he faces after losing the cup of coffee he was supposed to sell at the market. After this piece, the choir sang Elijah Rock by Traditional Spiritual and arranged by Moses Hogan. They finished their program with May the Road by Irish Blessing. To finish off the night, the chamber orchestra, directed by Ms. Catherine Fish, played String Symphony No. 9 in C Major I. Grave - Allegro by Felix Mendelssohn. The next piece, Concerto for 3 Violins in F Major, RV. 551 I. Allegro by Antonio Vivaldi was designed to feature six extremely talented senior violinists and bass continuo Grace Kang, Christina Kim, Lexi Tan, Christopher Lo, Winston Liu, Andrew Tsai, and Darren Yang. The chamber orchestra ended with Spanish Dance, from “The Gadfly” by Dmitri Shostakovich which was extremely fast and took less than two minutes to play. Congrats to all the hardworking Herricks musicians and teachers for showcasing another great concert and Happy Valentine’s Day Eve to all!

Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) Concerto Competition (2/6/19)
On Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the Congregational Church of Huntington in Centerport, NY, the MYO Concerto Competition was held. Senior clarinetist Ju-Young Yi won first place in Division II after performing against fifteen other finalists. This competition was created in 2008, and it has always been known to select only the best of the best as its winner. Only members of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra are able to enter this competition, and MYO meets every week on Tuesdays in the evening. Clearly, it is through Ju-Young’s commitment and zeal for clarinet that won the hearts of the judges. Ju-Young is also a valued member of the wind ensemble and attends the highly esteemed Manhattan School of Music every Saturday. We are so proud that our very own president of Tri-M is the first place winner in this reputable competition! Congratulations!

Young Musicians Program Tilles Center Concert (2/6/19)
On Wednesday February 6th, two of Herricks’ chamber groups, a cello quartet and a clarinet trio, had the prestigious opportunity to perform at Tilles Center as both had been selected by the Chamber Music Society’s Young Musicians Program. The cello quartet of Dara Bao, Justin Koe, Kyle Pinzon, and Justin Yang, performed Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1, III Fugue. The clarinet trio of Julia Feldman (piano), Grace Kang (violin), and Ju-Young Yi (clarinet), performed all four movements of the Milhaud trio. Both groups pulled off amazing, beyond imagination performances and received much support from the audience. Friends, family, and even the Herricks Chamber Orchestra came together to cheer for them! In the midst of the beautifully executed performance by the cello quartet, their preparation was even more evident when Kyle Pinzon's surprisingly fell off the stand but he continued to play it memorized! Herricks musicians truly represent dedication and undying love for music. These two groups have pulled off an even greater feat and will be heading to Indianapolis in a month to participate in the Music for All National Chamber Music Festival along with the 13 other groups chosen nationally. We are all so proud to call them Herricks musicians and we'll be cheering for them always!

Benefit Concert (1/30/19)
In the midst of a cold Wednesday evening, the cello quartet comprised of Dara Bao, Kyle Pinzon, Justin Yang, and Justin Koe and trio consisting of violinist Grace Kang, clarinetist Ju-Young Yi, and pianist Julia Feldman held a benefit concert. The groups will head to Indianapolis in March from the 14th to 16th to showcase their music. These musicians have rehearsed countless hours during school and after school and received mentorship from Ms. Catherine Fish to develop their artistic sensitivities and skills in performing music. The musicians also sold a variety of magic rosin to fundraise for their trip, and students ranging from all ages joined us for the concert. The cello quartet played Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1, III Fugue, Entertainer, and Over the Rainbow. They also played Make You Feel My Love by Adele and the Pink Panther theme song. The trio played all four movements of the Milhaud trio and Meditation from Thais. There was also a jazz combo which consisted of Ju-Young, Darren, Julia, and Matt Cosola. They performed the Blues from “An American in Paris” and Cantina Band. Following the repertoire was a time filled with fun! These musicians were challenged to have two people play on the same instrument, bow with their left hand and finger with their right hand, play blindfolded, and even play their instruments while hula-hooping! The night ended with a song everyone has surely heard before-- Baby Shark! All these musicians are the pride of our music program here at Herricks, and we are so blessed to have such dedicated musicians in our district!

Island Music Festival (1/20/19)
On January 20, one of our amazing Tri-M president's, Joanna Lau, performed a winter community concert at the St. Peters-by-The-Sea Episcopal Church. She is the winner of the Paul Rudoff Award in the highly competitive ISO Young Performers Competition. This competition is open to all instrumentalists, 18 years old or younger. All applicants are required to send in an audio recording of themselves performing an entire movement with accompaniment along with a recommendation from their current private teacher. During her performance, she displayed incredible musicality as always, playing the pieces: Fingals Cave (The Hebrides) Overture by Mendelssohn, the Mozart Flute Concerto, and the Haydn Symphony No. 97. Unsurprisingly, she captured the audience's undivided attention, exemplifying her dedication to music and the practice itself. Without a doubt, we are proud to call her one of our very own at Herricks. Congratulations Joanna!

All-County Music Festival (1/15/19-1/19/19)
During the week of January 13th, Herricks musicians from orchestra, band, and chorus, headed over to Syosset High School and East Meadow High School to participate in the Nassau County All-County Music Festival. Carefully selected students rehearsed for 12+ hours within three days in preparation to perform at the Tilles Center on January 19th. Though the rehearsals were long and students dedicated a lot of time to this festival, they had the opportunity to meet new and old friends who share the same love for music. The festival ended on Sunday with two successful concerts of both Division IV and V despite the small time span given for rehearsal.
Herricks, as always, contributed by lending the school for the All-County Division II festival. Tri-M members were very helpful in directing students and selling food at the festival. Cheers to another year of Herricks representation and success at the All-County festivals!

LISFA Chamber Music Festival (1/6/19)
On Sunday, January 6th, Genesis Kang and Tina Zhao attended the LISFA Chamber Music Festival as a duet. Upon arriving at the Hofstra Monroe Lecture Center, they listened to the Bryant Park Quintet perform. After this, they participated in an activity that helped them to express their emotions better. These skills were developed further when they received coaching from the Bryant Park Quintet. The evocation of emotions was strongly emphasized, and the duet was able to perform Movement II of the Sonata for Two Violins by Prokofiev more stylistically with the obtained skills such as more eye contact, movement, breathing, and facial expressions. Herricks really stood out despite the many schools that were represented during this concert, and we hope to continue outshining others!

Holiday Coffeehouse (12/19/18)
On Friday December 19, Tri-M held a jolly holiday coffeehouse in which both students and teachers showcased their skills by performing upbeat holiday music. Christmas lights, hot chocolate, and other holiday snacks provided by Tri-M set the festive mood for the afternoon. From our Tri-M members, we had the pleasure of listening to string quartets and a wonderful house band. Herricks teachers also displayed their passionate holiday sentiment by singing songs like the infamous Feliz Navidad and even self-composed holiday songs! The audience, of course, also joined in on the singing with smiles on their faces. This coffeehouse was a great way to show the talent of Herricks musicians, of both students and teachers, while having fun! It was an amazing way to end the year and cheers to 2019!

Winter Orchestra Concert (12/12/18)
It’s that time of year again! On December 12, the 9th Grade Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra performed at the Winter Concert. The freshmen orchestra led the concert with their radiant and powerful energy, followed by the Concert Orchestra with their catchy melodies and beautiful violin solo. The Chamber Orchestra featured their cello section, which played the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Cellos. The concert took a turn when the Concert Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra played Africa by Toto as the audience sang along. To finish the night off, all three orchestras squeezed onto the stage and into the pit to perform Let it Snow. Many people were taken aback by the ease at which the musicians seemed to perform their unique and difficult repertoire, which goes to show the great amount of time and effort the students, teachers, and administrators put in to carry out such a successful concert. It was a great night to celebrate the hard work and to keep up the spirits of family and friends.

NYSSMA All-State Conference (11/29/18-12/2/18)
In late August, 27 Herricks students received acceptance letters regarding their acceptance into the New York State School Music Association sponsored All-State. Of the 27, 14 students were accepted to participate in the music festival. On November 29, the 14 Herricks students headed over to Rochester, New York to rehearse and perform with other students across the state who had also been accepted to participate. The students stayed at the Rochester Riverside Hotel for their 3 nights there. They had the amazing opportunity to meet many new friends statewide and visit the convention center packed with hundreds of equally musical students. Though each day was filled with rigorous rehearsals, all the hard work was paid off with the 2 wonderful concerts on December 1st and 2nd. With the help of amazing conductors, the students managed to pull off these breathtaking concerts, despite the short time span. The festival was concluded on December 2nd, with the final performances from the Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, and Mixed Chorus. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

There, musicians from all over the country came together to practice challenging repertoire. They performed Komm, süßer Tod by Bach-Stokowski, Le Delaisse’e et ses soupires by Occide Jeanty, Red Cape Tango by Michael Daugherty, and Un Sel Badjo by Ferere Laguerre. They were also able to have fun together at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. “It was an unforgettable and once in a lifetime experience that was worth missing all the school work,” she confessed. There were also numerous great speakers that shared their inspiring experiences in music, and Tri-M. This event was indicative of the Tri-M spirit, as we were all able to bond and grow closer as musicians, and students. Jazz Night (6/08/18)
On June 8th, several Herricks band and chorus groups performed at the Tri-M held annual Jazz Night as a mellow way to end the school year. From hours of rehearsal and practice, students were able to showcase their remarkable musicality and understanding in playing what some people know as “America’s classical music”. Herricks staff and administrators, friends, and families arrived to enjoy the melodious music and show support for the music program. The music was accompanied by ice cream and refreshments, served by the Tri-M board members. As the sun began to set, the tuneful night slowly came to an end. From our middle school jazz band to the solos from our graduating seniors, another Herricks Jazz Night has proved to be a success!
