Quaran-TriM (Began 3/20)
With all of the Covid-19 news coming out, everyone has been stuck in quarantine since mid-March. Unfortunately, this means that all music ensembles (including those in school) and most private lessons have been cancelled until further notice. Therefore, many ensembles and teachers have been using social media platforms, FaceTime, and Skype to contact students and rejoin online and play together. Herricks Tri-M created Quaran-TriM in order to reunite all students participating in the Herricks Music Department during these uncertain times. We also want students to continue playing their instruments during this quarantine period and to have fun while doing so. Ever since the start of the quarantine, we have been making daily videos that consist of compilations of students playing different musical selections and trying different challenges. So far, there have been students submitting videos of them doing the toilet paper challenge, and there have been so many students all throughout the Herricks School District ranging from kindergarten to grade 12 who have submitted videos of “porch music.” For porch music, students are allowed to perform any piece of music they enjoy playing or singing at home or on their porches/backyards with their families. The purpose of porch music is to unite Herricks as a community and bring peace and healing to everyone. In order to watch these videos, click on the top right corner of this website where there is a section titled “Quaran-TriM.” Enjoy :) We hope everyone stays safe and hopeful during this time. Stay strong Herricks!

NYSSMA Recital (03/12/20)
On Thursday March 12, Tri-M members had their annual NYSSMA recital in preparation for the NYSSMA Festival that was supposed to be held during the first week of April (now suspended due to COVID-19). This was a wonderful opportunity to practice performing in front of others, since members were to play their NYSSMA pieces in front of their peers! These members have been practicing their pieces for months, and by holding this recital, they were able to exhibit their excellent music skills and hard work. Members were assigned to different rooms based on the instrument and level they played (string, wind/voice, and All-State). Good luck to all students who are participating in the NYSSMA Festival this year (if it is still being held) and stay safe! We appreciate everyone's hard work :)

4th Annual Young Musicians Long Island Regional Concert (02/11/20)
On Tuesday, February 11, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center held the 4th Annual Young Musicians Long Island Regional Concert at Tilles Center, LIU Post. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is a chamber music organization that promotes, educates, and nurtures a love and appreciation for the arts. CMS has committed to fostering and displaying the talent of people from different backgrounds, ages, and levels of musical knowledge, including young artists. Every year, CMS provides high school students in instrumental, vocal, or mixed ensembles an opportunity to cultivate and showcase their musicality through the Young Musicians Program. In order to participate in this program, ensembles were required to send recordings of their piece to CMS. Ensembles from eight different schools across Long Island were accepted, including two groups from Herricks High School. The first ensemble was a piano quartet, consisting of pianist, Chiara Tan (Tri-M Co-Historian), and three cellists, Kyle Pinzon, Justin Yang (Tri-M Co-Historian), and Justin Koe. The second ensemble was a trio, consisting of two violinists, Genesis Kang and Timothy Kim (Tri-M Public Relations Officer), and violist, Brendon Lau. Both groups committed numerous hours of practice to participate in this program and were excited at the great news of admittance. As a part of this program, the ensembles were provided a coaching session that assisted them in further developing their understanding of their music. Two days after the coaching session, the two ensembles were ready to take on the stage at Tilles Center. The piano quartet performed the “Requiem for Three Cellos and Piano, Op.66” by David Popper. Their musicality was phenomenal and the amount of detail that went into their performance was truly impressive. The members could be seen sitting on the edge of their chairs, communicating with each other, and becoming one with the music. Their performance was, with no doubt, a work of art, and the joint effort of the members really put on a memorable show for the audience. The trio also did not fail to wow the audience with their performance of “Terzetto in C major for Two Violins and Viola Op. 74 Larghetto” Antonín Dvořák. Their piece was quite distinct from other ensembles, featuring a sustained but passionate melody. The trio’s sensitivity to the music was admirable and their talent could be seen in the way they listened and responded to each other. Their passionate and emotional performance truly reached the hearts of the audience and shed a new light on the value of music. Both ensembles made invaluable memories for themselves and the audience, and it would be an understatement to say that both ensembles blew the audience away with their outstanding performances. The results of the regional round will be announced in late March, and we believe that these two ensembles, if anything, deserve to be finalists. Congratulations to these two ensembles, and we look forward to their future as musicians!

I Giovani Solisti Chamber Orchestra Visit (01/31/20)
On Tuesday January 31, the Herricks High School chamber orchestra played with I Giovani Solisti, an ensemble made up of students from Conard High School and Hall High School located in West Hartford, CT. Together, the Herricks chamber orchestra and I Giovani Solisti performed Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence Allegretto moderato” under the direction of the Herricks High School band conductor Mr. Scott Stickley. This event was an outstanding way for Herricks students to connect with other students from another ensemble that also plays at high levels and with such passion for music. Many members in the Herricks Tri-M Honor Society participate in the chamber orchestra, and they experienced such a wonderful and entertaining event. Everyone was thrilled to invite the I Giovani Solisti chamber orchestra to Herricks! Thank you for coming and we hope to see you soon!

Herricks Idol Season 16 (01/10/20)
On Friday, January 10, Tri-M kicked off the new year with the highly anticipated, Herricks Idol. This year, Idol was based on the big hit, La La Land with the hopes of sharing the magic of music. We were honored to have three guest judges, Mr. Hodge, our assistant principal, Mr. O’Brien, a beloved business teacher, and Mrs. Cristina Rahn, a Herricks alumni. We were also so lucky to have two extremely charismatic MC’s, Rohan Gupta and Priya Shah. The night began with Christian Chung (11) singing Adele’s hit, When We Were Young. The following contestants did not disappoint, with Audrey Santosus (11) singing I’ll Follow You Into the Dark, Hubert Zhou (12), You are the Reason, Eunice Chen (12), None but Jesus, Jordan Liao (10), One, Irene Katehis (12), All I Want, Logan Rein (10), Dance with Me, Kaitlin Abraham (9), Free to Be Me, Lucas Lin (10), Into the Unknown, and Kathryn Ritchie (12), Take Me to Church. Although the contestants sang only a short segment of their respective songs in the primary round, the judges and audience were already overwhelmed with the amount of talent that these singers showcased. All the singers had their own unique approach to their songs and were able to communicate their love of music to the audience in such a short amount of time. After the three judges shared their feedback, they put their heads together and made the difficult choice of choosing the top four finalists.
Congratulations to the four finalists, Eunice Chen, Kaitlin Abraham, Hubert Zhou, and Jordan Liao!
The four singers were honored to be finalists, and we could not have been prouder of these talented performers who gave it their all for many months. During the final round, the four finalists were further able to showcase their talent and artistry by singing their entire songs. The judges and audience were already overwhelmed with their singing in the first round, but soon they realized they had only seen a glimpse of their talent. Each finalist blew the audience away with their passionate performance. As the finalists finished their performances, ballots were handed out for the audience to vote for the best male and female singer of the night. While the ballots were being tallied up, the three guest performers took to the stage. Lawson Everitt (12) captivated the audience by singing Baby by Justin Bieber. Angela Joseph (12) gave quite a heart-wrenching performance by singing Writings on the Wall by Sam Smith. Christina Rahn surprised the audience with her musical abilities by singing Popular from the famous Broadway show, Wicked. We were honored to have these amazing performers as our guest singers, and it is an understatement to say the audience was impressed. Following the guest performances, the room suddenly became silent. Hearts pounding and ears straining, the audience leaned forward as Rohan and Priya made the most anticipated announcement of the night. Congratulations to the winners of the 16th season of Herricks Idol, Jordan Liao and Kaitlin Abraham! It was an emotional and heartwarming moment, as the contestants congratulated and commended each other for their amazing talent and hard work. The contestants enjoyed their last moments of Herricks Idol together as they sang the ending song, Another Day of Sun from La La Land. Each contestant truly deserved to be called an artist tonight, and we look forward to seeing where their love of music will lead them. Herricks Idol was a great success and this could not have been done without the hard work of Tri-M members. Months before, Tri-M Board members began preparing, starting from holding auditions and rehearsals to planning decorations. With the help of Tri-M members, Ms. Arnold, and the Tri-M Board, Herricks Idol’s 16th season was another great success! See everyone next year!

Sister Act (11/22/19 - 11/24/19)
From November 22-24, the Herricks High School Music Department showcased Sister Act. This musical is about Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer, witnessing a murder and is put in protective custody in one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent. She then proceeds to disguise herself as a nun and the musical continues to unravel by taking the audience through her journey. This musical is full of comedy, dancing, and gospel music. Sister Act also features music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, where instrumental music was performed by the pit orchestra, directed by Mr. Scott Stickley. This feel-good play kept the audience jumping to their feet, and the cast did an outstanding job all three days. Although this night was hectic, many parents enjoyed listening to the amazing music created by all students! It was definitely a night for students to be able to portray their music abilities. Members were to form groups and play music of their choice, and they were spread all throughout the high school in every hallway. Summer Music Program: Part 2 (7/22/19 - 8/2/19)
The remaining two weeks of the music program flew by way too fast. On Thursday, July 25, it was the students’ turn to perform for parents, teachers, and counselors. They played the music they have been practicing since the beginning of the program. The following day, we had a special assembly about didgeridoos (a wooden instrument created by the Indigenous Australians). The students enjoyed this assembly since they were able to hear different noises and sounds that are able to be produced by the didgeridoo, and they were also able to participate by even using a didgeridoo! The following week, on August 1, students performed for their families with the elective groups they chose to participate in. Elective groups included the guitar, ukulele, drum, rock band, and musical theatre. Then, on the last day of the program, students performed in bigger groups. There were two orchestra groups and two band groups-- each had an intermediate and beginner group. Additionally, the orchestra had a joint performance of both orchestras, and the band had a joint performance of both bands. The joint orchestra was conducted by Darren, and the joint band was conducted by Ju Young. The summer music program was such a great learning experience for kids and counselors. It gave students the opportunity to do something they don’t have access or time to do in school, and it gives students another way to have music in their life. A big thank you to all teachers, counselors, students, and parents who dedicated their time to such a wonderful program!! We hope to see you next summer.

Summer Music Program: Part 1 (7/8/19 - 7/19/19)
From July 8 to August 2 (4 weeks), students from the Herricks district ranging from grades 4-9 attended the Herricks Summer Music Camp. For the past two weeks, these students played new music and made new friends. Counselors ranging from grades 10-12 are in charge of teaching these curious students exciting and fun music to play. Counselors also help the kids during sectionals and orchestra/band/chorus group classes. We had a special performance by the band Squeaky Clean to end the first week of the music camp. All of the students enjoyed listening to their performance and even sang along to the songs they knew! At the end of the second week, we had a special counselor concert, where all counselors were to perform in small groups for the children. Once again, all of the kids loved the performances and the music we played. We cannot wait for the second half of the camp to happen-- we are all excited to listen and watch more special performances and to participate in the student concerts!!
